Evaluating Eisenhower:
· Old man, in an old party with old advisors dealing with old problems
· His image deliberately resembled a grandad
· He was unable to anticipate new problems nor adjust to the winds of change
· January 1961 Eisenhower delivered his farewell address concerned about the internal cost of the Cold War. He thought the small-town America was being threatened by the big government, ending the old American values
· JFK brought new ideas and approaches while dealing with tough problems as they dynamic president that Eisenhower wasn’t
A success:
· Despite the U-2 wreckage and the summit he still improved relations with Russia
· Avoided war
· Kept the arms race at a low level
· Eased the policy of permanent crisis
A failure:
· He had failed to liberate any communist slaves
· Communism fell in Indochina
· Unable to end the Cold War
· Russia established a base in the Mediterranean
· The Cuban crisis
